Monuments - Umbria
The Duomo is one of the most renowned sights in central Italy and features a colourful decoration of white travertine and green basalt stripes. The facade includes some remarkable sculptures, blind arches with pilaster strips, mosaics and a striking rose window with Gothic stone mullions and tracery set within a square flanked by high reliefs.
The massive Palazzo del Popolo (people palazzo, that is to say the city council) is a medieval red tufa and basalt building featuring a first floor gallery of three-arch headed windows and a flat roof topped with a battlemented parapet. Today it hosts temporary exhibitions.
