6 days between villas, gardens and castles

Tuscia is a historical region of Italy that comprised the territories under Etruscan influence and the name adopted for Etruria after the Roman conquest. While it later came to coincide with today’s province of Viterbo, it was originally much larger, including the whole region of Tuscany, a great part of Umbria and the northern parts of Lazio.

1st day: Arrival
Every day of week if possible except on Sunday because on Monday all monuments are closed to visit. Arrival in Viterbo or surroundings in Northern Latium, accomodation at the hotel. Dinner and overnight.

2nd day: San Liberato Gardens and Odescalchi Castle
In the morning visit to the Counts Sanminiatelli’s San Liberato Gardens. The gardens, overlooking lake Bracciano, were designed by Russel Page who created a unique landscape by introducing trees with remarkable assortment of flowers, leaves and bark.
During closing period of San Liberato this visit will be substituted with a visit to Castel Giuliano and its wonderful garden rich with precious and rare roses.
Later in the morning a visit to the Odescalchi Castle, on the southern shore of lake Bracciano, majestically reigns as one of the most beautiful feudal residences in all of Europe. Construction began in the second half of the fifteenth century, and is the realization of an ideal meeting point between military and civilian architecture. Free time for lunch.
In the afternoon free time for a walk in the historical centre of the village or on the lakeside road. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

3rd day: Viterbo
In the morning departure for Viterbo.
Stop in Ronciglione for a visit to Villa Lina, a farming estate in the heart of Etruscan Tuscia, on the Via Cassia, the ancient road from Rome to Siena. The park was created in 18th century, when most of the trees were planted. The great variety of botanical species in evidence, in an example of the 18th century garden, when an interest towards exotic plants developed. Its fountains are inspired by different styles, from the Viterbese Baroque to the Metaphysical which makes Villa Lina a unique example of post-modern garden. Free time for lunch.
In the afternoon visit to Farnese Castle in Caprarola: dating back to 1559-1575 the imposing palace was built according to a plan by Vignola and it witnesses the power of the Farnese family. Inside you can admire the wide halls decorated by the Zuccari brothers and by other artists belonging to Roman and European Mannerism. In late afternoon arrival in Viterbo and accomodation at the hotel.
Dinner at the hotel.

4th day: Orsini and Ruspoli Castles
In the morning departure for Vasanello and visit to the Orsini Castle Misciattelli and to the Medieval style garden surrounding it. It was commissioned in the XIII century by the Orsini family and was bought by the marquise Misciatelli in 1907. Buffet in the castle guests of the marquise. In the afternoon departure for Vignanello. Visit to the Castello Ruspoli and its garden which design has been unchanged since it came into being.
It extends over a level rectangular space set along the eastern side of the palace and is divided into twelve compartments.
Back to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

5th day: Villa Lante in Bagnaia
After breakfast departure for Villa Lante in Bagnaia, one of the greater realizations of the 1500’s in Italy. To remember in particular the Fountains of the Moors of the Giambologna, the two mansions (Gambara and Montalto) and a spectacular system of the Fountains and water games beyond a beautiful park.
Free time for lunch. In the afternoon visit to the exoteric park of Bomarzo, known as « the park of Monsters ». Back to Viterbo.
Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

6 th day: Departure
Breakfast at the hotel.
