The green heart of Italy
Umbria is a land rich in history and art - its natural landscape is of an incomparable beauty, for this reason the region is also known as the Green Heart of Italy. Its mystical atmospheres make it a territory of immense fascination and profound harmony.
Not to mention its traditional cuisine with its strong flavours and a popular tradition of festivities and sagras, among the more exuberant in Italy.
1st day - Arrival – ASSISI
Arrival, accommodation at the hotel dinner and overnight.
2nd day - ASSISI - PERUGIA
Breakfast and departure for Assisi, the city of Saint Francis and Santa Chiara. Visit the Basilica of S.Francis, in romanic-gothic style, located on two levels, with the beautiful frescos by Giotto, the gothic Basilica of Santa Chiara that treasures the remains of Santa Chiara, Piazza del Comune with the elegant palace of the Priori, Palace of the Capitano del Popolo and the temple of Minerva.
Walk along Via San Francesco with its small craft shops, the Giacobetti palace (where the public library is and where the original Laudes Creaturarum is kept). Free time for lunch. In the afternoon continuation of the visit with the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, outside the walls, with the chapel of the Porziuncola of Benedictine origin where saint Francis founded the Franciscan order in 1209. Continuation to the Eremo delle Carceri, located on mount Subasio, oasis of peace and symbol of the spirituality of Saint Francis and his companions. The hermitage is reachable only by minibus or on foot. Dinner and overnight at the hotel
3rd day - PERUGIA - TRASIMENO LAKE
Breakfast at the hotel, departure for Perugia the main city of Umbria. Located in a panoramic position, it is reachable with a modern system of moving stairs . Visit of the city with the palace of the Priori, architectural jewel of great artistic value, the Maggiore fountain, work by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano in 1278, the Cathedral of S. Lorenzo with the Chapel of the Santo Anello, where according to an old tradition, the Virgin Mary’s wedding ring is kept.
The Church of S. Domenico that houses the important National Archaelogical Museum ofUmbria. For the lovers of chocolate a stop in the “Perugina” shop famous for its chocolate and “Bacio”.
Free time for lunch. In the afternoon continuation to the Trasimeno lake, the largest of central Italy, with banks covered with pine trees, cypresses, vineyards and olive groves. Dinner at the hotel.
4th day – TERNI and the MARMORE FALLS
Breakfast and departure to visit the city of Terni: the church of San Salvatore, of early Christian origin, with interesting frescos; the Spada palace, an important noble building, the roman amphitheatre; the church of Saint Francis, one of the cities’ architectural jewels. Drive to the Marmore falls, grand natural sight, the highest of Europe with its 165 metres. Drive to Spoleto, one of the oldest towns of Umbria, and visit the town with its lovely views; the fortress that dominates the via Flaminia, completed in 1372, that is the most important fortress of the region, the Town hall, the Tower bridge. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight.
5th day – Departure
